Great Gatsby Essay

The Great Gatsby is a book which it brings attention to many readers. The book was basiclly based off on the american dream. The american dream, was something that was very prominent in the story as  it shows threw the betrayal deaths and heartbreak. The story shows how they each are trying to reach the dream of big houses ,spouses, and wealth. Each character wants this dream they each seem to have it but are missing something. The book gives us this explanation of the american dream but what I see is what brings them all down . I think that the american dream is a great thing but it can have its downsides and this story shows how it became a tragedy.
This starts off with the main character of the story Nick Carraway who is chasing his dream. He moves to the big city of New York after he finished his services. Nick heard many stories about Gatsby who seems to have it all hes rich, had many admirers. It seems that Gatsby himself has already acheived the american dream. But like most of the characters hes missing something. Gatsby's way of living wasn't to much of wealth which he did have but he focused more on love which was something he didn't have. Gatsby brings up a girl who he deeply fell in love with and would do anything for even brake the laws. Her name was Daisy Buchanan she was married to Tom. But that didn't matter to him he only wanted her. Nick didn't necessarily know any of this  until he met Gatsby. Gatsby was blinded by love that he didn't realize his decisions could be his downfall. He takes drastic measures when Daisy kills someone by running her over and just driving away. He decides to take the blame and let daisy get away with it. This shows that chasing the american dream can get him in trouble.
An example on how the american dream is bad is through betrayals. One of the betrayals that happend was when Tom blamed the death of the girl on Gatsby. He does this just so he can keep Daisy for himself. He didn't want anyone to have something he didn't so he proceeded to frame Gatsby just so he can keep Daisy even though he knew it was her who killed the girl. Tom already had the american dream he had wealth, kids, spouse and even a mistress but he achieved this by betraying Gatsby. Another example of a betrayal is the death of Gatsby. Everyone knew that he had the american dream people began to use him so that they can get their own dream. But when it comes to see who is actually his friend turns out only Nick was his actual friend who showed up to his funeral. None of the other people who used him showed up that day. The book again shows that the dream is bad.
Gatsby's death is an example on how the american dream is possible but it definatly has its downfall. Gatsby had spent his whole life trying to achieve his dream and he did but he wasted it for love all he needed for his dream was the love of his life. This has showed us That you can achieve the dream but at the same time you can not.
Overall the american dream can be bad but it can be good. But there is people who will do anything for the dream and will put themselves first. The American dream can be a good thing but if you over do it can come back and hurt you.
